What is frost heave?

Frost heave is the lifting and movement of soil caused by ice formation in frozen ground, which pushes up and cracks slabs, foundations, and other structures built above the frost line.

When soil moisture freezes during Connecticut winters, it expands and pushes upward on anything built on top of it. This upward pressure is frost heave, and it can crack and displace concrete slabs, walkways, driveways, patios, and foundation footings. The problem worsens in soils with high moisture content and fine particles that hold water easily.

Connecticut's frost line typically reaches 3.5 to 4 feet deep, depending on the region and soil type. Structures built above this depth are vulnerable to frost heave damage. As ground freezes from the surface downward through winter months, water in the soil forms ice lenses that grow larger with each freeze-thaw cycle, lifting the surface incrementally. By spring, damage becomes visible: cracked concrete, shifted pavers, and separated joints.

Preventing frost heave requires setting footings, foundations, and slab bases below the local frost line and using proper drainage to reduce ground moisture. Concrete contractors and masonry providers in Connecticut design flatwork and foundations with this protection in mind. Without it, freeze-thaw cycles cause repeated damage that becomes costly to repair over time. This is why frost line depth is a critical factor in any site plan involving concrete or masonry work in the state.
